Impact Window Installation: What to Expect

Most people have never had impact windows fitted and don't know what the process involves. Here is what actually happens, in order, so there are no surprises.

1. Measure and specify

We measure every opening and work out the design pressure each one has to meet, based on where it sits on the building. That determines the product, not the other way round.

2. Quote and order

You get a written quote covering the units, the labour and what's included. Once it's agreed and the deposit clears, we place the order. Custom sizes are made to your measurements.

3. Permits

Impact window and door work is permitted work in Florida. The permit is pulled before installation begins, and the product approval documentation goes with it.

4. Installation

Old units come out, new ones go in, are fixed to spec, sealed and finished. How long it takes depends on the number of openings and the construction.

5. Inspection

The work is inspected against the permit. That inspection is also what gives you documentation of a compliant installation.

6. Clean up

We take the old units away and clear the site.

Questions

Impact Window Installation: common questions

Do you need a permit to install impact windows?

Yes. In Florida, replacing windows and doors is permitted work, and the product approval documentation is submitted with the permit. The installation is then inspected.

How long does impact window installation take?

It depends on how many openings there are and what the walls are made of. A small job can be a day; a whole house is longer. We give you a realistic window when we quote rather than a number that sounds good.

Can I install impact windows myself?

It isn't advisable. Impact units only perform to their rating if they are fixed exactly as tested, and the work has to pass inspection against the permit. A unit that is installed wrong doesn't meet the design pressure it was specified for.

Do I have to move out while the work is done?

No. Work is done opening by opening, and the house is secure at the end of each day.
